How many parents and children in Baden-Württemberg have already been infected with the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2?

The Center for Child and Adolescent Medicine in Freiburg is investigating this question in cooperation with the University Hospitals in Heidelberg (study coordination), Tübingen and Ulm. The study was initiated by Baden-Württemberg’s Minister President Winfried Kretschmann and is financed with state funds. The study is being led in Freiburg by Prof. Dr. Philipp Henneke and Dr. Roland Elling, Department of Pediatric Infectiology and Rheumatology, Center for Child and Adolescent Medicine.

In Freiburg, more than 550 families participated the study. From each family, one parent and one child provided a nasal/throat swab for a SARS-CoV-2 PCR test and a blood sample to enable SARS-CoV-2 antibody testing. Families also completed a short questionnaire.

Results are expected in the next few weeks and follow-up studies are already in planning. More information will be posted on the study website as it becomes available.
