SUMMARY:International Symposium - From Paradigms to Paradoxes in Immunity and Immunopathology (PPII)
DESCRIPTION:The PPII symposium 2022 is jointly organized by the CRC1160 and the Center for Chronic Immunodeficiency (CCI). The symposium itself will take place at the University Building KG I located in the heart of Freiburg just a few minutes from the main railway station\, hotels and restaurants. \n\n\n\nThe organizing committee is compiling an exciting scientific program with plenary sessions held by internationally renowned speakers complemented by selected short talks from young scientists. \n\n\n\nThe topics of the symposium are: \n\n\n\nConcepts of Basic Molecular ImmunologyThe Paradox of Innate MemoryParadigms in Infection ImmunityImpaired Immune Reactions and ImmunopathologyCrosstalk in the Immune SystemParadoxes in adverse immune responsesFrontiers in gut immunity\n\n\n\nWe are grateful that Prof. Bruce BEUTLER (The Scripps Research Institute\, La Jolla\, USA) has agreed to deliver the Georges Köhler Lecture as well as that Prof. Steven HOLLAND (National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases & National Institute of Health\, Bethesda\, USA)\, Prof. Florian KRAMMER (Icahn School of Medicine\, Mount Sinai\, NY\, USA) have agreed to deliver Keynote Lectures. \n\n\n\nThe symposium will include poster presentations and talks by young researchers. Talks will be chosen from of submitted abstracts. Therefore\, we like to invite especially PhDs students and junior scientists to submit an abstract. \n\n\n\nMore information is available on our PPII symposium Webpage: www.sfb1160.uni-freiburg.de/international-symposium/

SUMMARY:ERC Starting Grants 2023
DESCRIPTION:Objectives: The ERC Starting Grants are designed to support excellent Principal Investigators at the career stage at which they are starting their own independent research team or programme. Principal Investigators must demonstrate the ground-breaking nature\, ambition and feasibility of their scientific proposal. \n\n\n\nSize of ERC Starting Grants: up to a maximum of EUR 1 500 000 for a period of 5 years (reduced for projects of a shorter duration) \n\n\n\nAdditional funding up to EUR 1 000 000 can be requested in the proposal to cover eligible costs when these are necessary to carry out the proposed work. \n\n\n\nProfile of the ERC Starting Grant Principal Investigator: The Principal Investigators shall have successfully defended their first PhD at least 2 and up to 7 years prior to 1 January 2023. Cut-off dates: Successful defence of PhD between 1 January 2016 and 31 December 2020 (inclusive). The eligibility period can be extended beyond 7 years in certain properly documented circumstances. \n\n\n\nA competitive Starting Grant Principal Investigator must have already shown the potential for research independence and evidence of maturity\, for example by having produced at least one important publication as main author or without the participation of their PhD supervisor. Applicant Principal Investigators should also be able to demonstrate a promising track record of early achievements appropriate to their research field and career stage\, including\, e.g. significant publications (as main author) in major international peer-reviewed multidisciplinary scientific journals\, or signitficant publications in the leading international peer-reviewed journals of their respective field\, or research monographs. They may also demonstrate a record of invited presentations in well-established international conferences\, granted patents\, awards\, prizes\, or any other scientific achievements they deem relevant in relation to their research field and project. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nMore information can be found here. \n\n\n\nIf you want to apply for an ERC Starting Grant\, please contact the EU Office of the Dean of Research as early as possible.

SUMMARY:Increasing value of medical research through complete\, transparent and unbiased reporting
DESCRIPTION:Start of new curriculum of the Lecture Series – Pitfalls and Solutions: ‘Good Experimental Design’: \n\n\n\nTopic:              Increasing value of medical research through complete\, transparent and unbiased reporting \n\n\n\nSpeaker:         Prof. Joerg J Meerpohl\, Institute for Evidence in Medicine\, Medical Center & Faculty of Medicine\, University of Freiburg and Cochrane Germany\, Cochrane Germany Foundation\, Freiburg \n\n\n\nTime:              Wednesday\, 26 October 2022 at 5 pm \n\n\n\nVenue:            Seminar room ground floor\, Zentrum Translationale Zellforschung (ZTZ)\, Breisacher Str. 115 \n\n\n\nThe current guidelines and Corona measures of the Medical Center – University of Freiburg will apply for this lecture. A 3G confirmation will be required (as of 28 April 2022). \n\n\n\nAbstract:         In 2014\, researchers argued in a series in the Lancet (1)\, that 85% of medical research suffers from important limitations that impact severely on its value. They identified 5 areas which are priorities to improve on to increase the value of biomedical research: (a) relevance of the research question; (b) use of appropriate research design\, methods and analysis; (c) efficient research regulation and management; (d) full access to research information; (e) unbiased and usable research reports. \n\n\n\nThis seminar will focus on shortcomings in access to research information (area 4) and limitations in research reports (area 5). Current initiatives (e.g. www.equator-network.org) and recent methodological developments to increase value of research will be discussed. In particular\, important reporting guidelines such as CONSORT for randomized controlled trials (2)\, STROBE for observational studies (3) and ARRIVE for animal studies (4) will be introduced. \n\n\n\nRegistration:   The lecture will take place as an on-site event. Participation is only possible with registration. Please register in advance for the lecture using the following link: \n\n\n\nhttps://www.med.uni-freiburg.de/de/forschung/Forschungsdekanat/Veranstaltungen-des-Forschungsdekanats/lecture-series-experimental/lecture-2022-registration \n\n\n\n————————————– \n\n\n\nReferences: \n\n\n\n1.         Macleod MR\, Michie S\, Roberts I\, Dirnagl U\, Chalmers I\, Ioannidis JP\, et al.
