SUMMARY:Training course on Paediatric Infectious Diseases
DESCRIPTION:Paediatric Infectious Diseases (PID) is a recognised sub-speciality by the Spanish Paediatric Society (AEP). There are important and regular\, local and nationwide PID meetings and congresses organised by the Spanish Society of Paediatric Infectious Diseases (SEIP\, http://www.seipweb.es/) as well as the AEP. For many years now\, members and study groups of the SEIP have been working closer and closer with PID colleagues from other European countries. This was and continues to be facilitated by the European Society for Paediatric Infectious Diseases (ESPID). The first training course for paediatric infectious diseases trainees took place in 2013/2014 and consisted of 3 modules hold in Seville\, Madrid and Barcelona. This course was supported by ESPID and was extremely successful with overall very positive feedback from the students as well as the speakers. Subsequent annual courses were held in Seville and attended by around 100 participants. \n\n\n\nThe COVID-19 pandemic has also sadly affected this planned to be presential course. \n\n\n\nThe forthcoming training course will be held in Seville on 14th-15th of April 2023. According to the comments/evaluations made by the students and speakers\, the course will be increased to a maximum of 120 participants; topics will continue to cover and update Paediatricians in relevant/hot topics of Infectious Diseases and Immunology and the number of interactive cases will be increased. Educational clinical cases will be prepared by the speakers and rounded up with a general discussion. \n\n\n\nThe invited speakers will be national and international experts in infectious diseases and immunology. In addition\, we will invite 2-3 junior ID consultants. Language of the course will be in English. \n\n\n\nAs it was in the last training courses\, it will be accredited (13h) for the students as well as for the speakers as continuous professional training (Comision de Formacion Continuada) on a national level and the students will evaluate sessions. This time\, 7 speakers from the UK\, France\, Germany and the USA will be invited. \n\n\n\nThe aim of the 7th course is to continue to develop a national training program in PID in order to offer equal trainee opportunities on a nationwide base and on the long term to seek recognition of PID sub-speciality by the Spanish educational training board. The training course is for PID trainees from Spain and any other European country; candidates should be members of GAIP (Andalusian Group of Paediatric Infectious Diseases and Immunopathology)\, SEIP (Spanish Society of Paediatric Infectious Diseases)\, ESPID or ESID (European society for immunodeficiencies); however\, the course will be open to all interested clinician. \n\n\n\nWe would like to thank ESPID\, ESID\, SEIP and the industrial sponsors for their continuous  support.

SUMMARY:Animal Models for basic & clinical research – PROS and CONS and (legal) risks
DESCRIPTION:The next talk within the Lecture Series – Pitfalls and Solutions: ‘Good Experimental Design’ will be held on 14 December at 5pm. \n\n\n\nTopic: Animal Models for basic & clinical research – PROS and CONS and (legal) risks \n\n\n\nSpeaker:         Prof. Sebastian Arnold\, Institute of Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology \n\n\n\nTime:              Wednesday\, 14 December 2022 at 5 pm \n\n\n\nVenue:            Seminar room ground floor\, Zentrum Translationale Zellforschung (ZTZ)\, Breisacher Str. 115 \n\n\n\nAbstract:         Animal models serve as fundamental tools in basic and clinical biomedical research. In this lecture we will discuss different model systems\, including a historical perspective\, and evaluate the benefits of different model systems for certain research purposes and questions. It will be highlighted how important the correct choice of different model systems is\, and how inappropriate choice of model system sets limitations within studies and also for the transfer of experimental findings. \n\n\n\nEspecially in recent years\, the legislation towards usage of animals for experiments has changed not only our thinking\, but lead to direct consequences on daily work with animal model systems. We will touch the current regulations and issues that result from still not entirely resolved legal questions. \n\n\n\nFinally\, especially in recent years considerable efforts were made to establish non-animal model systems for biomedical research. We will discuss examples of organoid and embryoid model system\, their limitations\, but also the immense advantages that they deliver. \n\n\n\nRegistration:   The lecture will take place as an on-site event. Participation is only possible with registration. Please register in advance for the lecture using the following link: \n\n\n\nhttps://www.med.uni-freiburg.de/de/forschung/Forschungsdekanat/Veranstaltungen-des-Forschungsdekanats/lecture-series-experimental/lecture-2022-registration \n\n\n\nThe current guidelines and Corona measures by the Medical Center – University of Freiburg will apply for this lecture. \n\n\n\nPlease find information on the current talk and the program of the Lecture Series attached. \n\n\n\nFor further details please refer to: https://www.med.uni-freiburg.de/de/forschung/Forschungsdekanat/Veranstaltungen-des-Forschungsdekanats/lecture-series-experimental \n\n\n\nPlease note also our courses of the EQUIP (Education and Qualification of Postdocs) program for Postdocs of the Faculty of Medicine: \n\n\n\nhttps://www.med.uni-freiburg.de/de/forschung/karrierewege/equip/kurse \n\n\n\nIf you are a Postdoc of the medical faculty and wish to stay informed about specific courses\, lectures\, events\, calls and other information relevant to postdocs subscribe to our postdoc mailing list.

SUMMARY:Increasing value of medical research through complete\, transparent and unbiased reporting
DESCRIPTION:Start of new curriculum of the Lecture Series – Pitfalls and Solutions: ‘Good Experimental Design’: \n\n\n\nTopic:              Increasing value of medical research through complete\, transparent and unbiased reporting \n\n\n\nSpeaker:         Prof. Joerg J Meerpohl\, Institute for Evidence in Medicine\, Medical Center & Faculty of Medicine\, University of Freiburg and Cochrane Germany\, Cochrane Germany Foundation\, Freiburg \n\n\n\nTime:              Wednesday\, 26 October 2022 at 5 pm \n\n\n\nVenue:            Seminar room ground floor\, Zentrum Translationale Zellforschung (ZTZ)\, Breisacher Str. 115 \n\n\n\nThe current guidelines and Corona measures of the Medical Center – University of Freiburg will apply for this lecture. A 3G confirmation will be required (as of 28 April 2022). \n\n\n\nAbstract:         In 2014\, researchers argued in a series in the Lancet (1)\, that 85% of medical research suffers from important limitations that impact severely on its value. They identified 5 areas which are priorities to improve on to increase the value of biomedical research: (a) relevance of the research question; (b) use of appropriate research design\, methods and analysis; (c) efficient research regulation and management; (d) full access to research information; (e) unbiased and usable research reports. \n\n\n\nThis seminar will focus on shortcomings in access to research information (area 4) and limitations in research reports (area 5). Current initiatives (e.g. www.equator-network.org) and recent methodological developments to increase value of research will be discussed. In particular\, important reporting guidelines such as CONSORT for randomized controlled trials (2)\, STROBE for observational studies (3) and ARRIVE for animal studies (4) will be introduced. \n\n\n\nRegistration:   The lecture will take place as an on-site event. Participation is only possible with registration. Please register in advance for the lecture using the following link: \n\n\n\nhttps://www.med.uni-freiburg.de/de/forschung/Forschungsdekanat/Veranstaltungen-des-Forschungsdekanats/lecture-series-experimental/lecture-2022-registration \n\n\n\n————————————– \n\n\n\nReferences: \n\n\n\n1.         Macleod MR\, Michie S\, Roberts I\, Dirnagl U\, Chalmers I\, Ioannidis JP\, et al. SUMMARY:"Responsible Research" Symposium (online)
DESCRIPTION:The graduate programs of the Life Science Campus Großhadern/Martinsried together with the GraduateCenterLMU will jointly host an event on responsible conduct in research. Master students\, doctoral candidates\, postdocs\, senior scientists – all are welcome! \n\n\n\nResearchers are obliged to conform to rules of Good Scientific Practice. While this might seem obvious at first glance\, a closer look reveals that these rules are often implicit\, and sometimes the border between acceptable and unacceptable practice may remain unclear. To raise awareness about these questions\, life science graduate programs in the greater Munich area and the GraduateCenterLMU have joined forces to organize a campus-wide educational event. \n\n\n\nKeynote lectures\, breakout sessions and “meet the speaker” forums\, active breaks and interactive participation!  \n\n\n\nWhat is responsible research? How can I present data accurately and reproducibly? What are conflicts of interest? What about preprint publishing and how does this change the conventionell publication routines? What do I need to know about open science? Where is the link between mental health\, well-being and responsible research? What is an ombudsperson and why should we discuss responsible conduct of research in the global context? These – and more – topics will be approached for researchers of all generations. \n\n\n\nDates: March 25 and 26\, 2021Time: 9:00 – 14:00 \n\n\n\nProgram and registration here.

SUMMARY:CANCELLED: Max Planck Seminar: Hematopoietic stem cells under inflammatory stress (Marieke Essers)
DESCRIPTION:“My group focuses on understanding the link of inflammation and the hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) compartment via the effect of pro-inflammatory cytokines on quiescent HSCs and their bone marrow niche. Investigating the effect of stress-induced pro-inflammatory cytokines on HSCs and their niche will allow us to better understand what the mechanisms are by which HSCs are reassuring the successful restoration of the blood system and how HSCs are protected from pathogenic insults.” \n\n\n\nLocation: MPI-IE (Main Lecture Hall) \n\n\n\nHosts: Eirini Trompouki & Nina Cabezas-Wallscheid \n\n\n\nhttps://www.ie-freiburg.mpg.de/events/23519/4815845
