SUMMARY:DFG: Ursula M. Händel Animal Welfare Prize
DESCRIPTION:The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG\, German Research Foundation) is awarding the Ursula M. Händel Animal Welfare Prize\, to honor researchers with outstanding contributions in promoting animal welfare in science and research. The research rewarded should contribute to reducing the burden on animals used in experiments\, reducing the number of animals used or replacing them (3R concept: Refinement\, Reduction\, Replacement). The prize calls for researchers who hold a doctorate and work at a German research institution or for teams with a maximum of four researchers. The prize is worth up to €80\,000 and is to be used for projects that benefit animal welfare in research. In addition to funding research projects\, the prize money can be used to finance complementary measures such as training and professional development for researchers who work with animals or scientific events to promote the idea of animal welfare in research. \n\n\n\nApplication forms can be viewed and submitted between 2 October and  5 November 2023 via the DFG’s elan portal under “Proposal Submission – Nominations – Ursula M. DESCRIPTION:The European Research Council (ERC) has opened the call for the Starting Grant (StG) 2024. The target group of the ERC StG are talented early-career scientists who are able to show excellent work and potential to be a research leader. Researchers of any nationality with 2-7 years of experience since completion of their PhD (extensions for applicants with doctoral degrees in medicine are possible under certain circumstances) can apply in any field of research. DESCRIPTION:The Academic Society of Freiburg im Breisgau has the objective to support early career scientists. Scientists of all disciplines are invited to apply for funding\, which can cover a variety of costs necessary for the implementation of scientific projects. Among others\, applications can be made for funding for trips relevant for their research (field trips\, study visits to improve research skills\, joint preparation of a larger research proposal)\, consumables for research projects\, publication or printing costs (e.g. dissertations with distinction i.e. summa cum laude or – in exceptional cases – excellent habilitation theses and publications that are deemed of outstanding importance for the scientific reputation of the University of Freiburg)\, climate-neutral lecture tours to important international conferences and congresses. Applications up to a funding volume of € 1\,500 are reviewed monthly (except in August)\, and are expected to be submitted by the beginning of the month. Applications with a higher funding volume (up to EUR 5\,000) are assesed twice a year in the meetings of the Board of Trustees. SUMMARY:ERC Synergy Grants 2023
DESCRIPTION:Objective: The aim is to provide support for a small group of two to four Principal Investigators to jointly address ambitious research problems that could not be addressed by the individual Principal Investigators and their teams working alone. Synergy projects should enable substantial advances at the frontiers of knowledge\, stemming\, for example\, from the cross-fertilization of scientific fields\, from new productive lines of enquiry\, or new methods and techniques\, including unconventional approaches and investigations at the interface between established disciplines. The transformative research funded by Synergy Grants should have the potential of becoming a benchmark on a global scale. \n\n\n\nPrincipal Investigators must demonstrate the ground-breaking nature\, ambition and feasibility of their scientific proposal. Principal Investigators must also demonstrate that their group can successfully bring together the scientific elements necessary to address the scope and complexity of the proposed research question. \n\n\n\nOne of the Principal Investigators must be designated as the Corresponding Principal Investigator. At any one time\, one Principal Investigator per Synergy Grant Group except the Corresponding one can be hosted or engaged by an institution outside of the EU or Associated Countries. \n\n\n\nSize of ERC Synergy Grants: Synergy Grants may be awarded up to a maximum of EUR 10 000 000 for a period of 6 years (reduced for projects of a shorter duration). \n\n\n\nHowever\, up to an additional EUR 4 000 000 in total can be requested in the proposal to cover additional costs (see further details). \n\n\n\nProfile of the ERC Synergy Grant Principal Investigators: The ‘Synergy Grant Group’ applying for the ERC Synergy Grant must be made up of a minimum of two and a maximum of four Principal Investigators with competitive track records and\, as necessary\, their teams. \n\n\n\nEach Principal Investigator must present as part of the proposal either an early achievement track-record or a 10-year track-record\, whichever is most appropriate for their career stage (see Starting\, Consolidator and Advanced Grant profiles in the ERC Work Programme 2023). DESCRIPTION:Objectives: The ERC Starting Grants are designed to support excellent Principal Investigators at the career stage at which they are starting their own independent research team or programme. Principal Investigators must demonstrate the ground-breaking nature\, ambition and feasibility of their scientific proposal. \n\n\n\nSize of ERC Starting Grants: up to a maximum of EUR 1 500 000 for a period of 5 years (reduced for projects of a shorter duration) \n\n\n\nAdditional funding up to EUR 1 000 000 can be requested in the proposal to cover eligible costs when these are necessary to carry out the proposed work. \n\n\n\nProfile of the ERC Starting Grant Principal Investigator: The Principal Investigators shall have successfully defended their first PhD at least 2 and up to 7 years prior to 1 January 2023. Cut-off dates: Successful defence of PhD between 1 January 2016 and 31 December 2020 (inclusive). The eligibility period can be extended beyond 7 years in certain properly documented circumstances. \n\n\n\nA competitive Starting Grant Principal Investigator must have already shown the potential for research independence and evidence of maturity\, for example by having produced at least one important publication as main author or without the participation of their PhD supervisor. Applicant Principal Investigators should also be able to demonstrate a promising track record of early achievements appropriate to their research field and career stage\, including\, e.g. significant publications (as main author) in major international peer-reviewed multidisciplinary scientific journals\, or signitficant publications in the leading international peer-reviewed journals of their respective field\, or research monographs. DESCRIPTION:With the aim of giving well-established\, excellent scientists the necessary freedom to develop new conceptual approaches by pursuing innovative\, ground-breaking ideas for the prevention\, diagnosis and treatment of cancer\, the German Cancer Aid has decided to launch a second call for applications within the ‘Excellence Funding Programme for Established Scientists’. This programme enables the submission of long-term ‘high-risk – high gain’ research projects. \n\n\n\nProfessors and group leaders successfully working in clinical or basic clinically oriented cancer re-search with an outstanding academic CV are eligible to apply. \n\n\n\nThe programme gives scientists the opportunity to work on projects that cannot be funded within the scope of other German Cancer Aid funding programmes or by institutional core funding. \n\n\n\nFunding of up to a maximum of € 1.5 million is available for a period of 5 years. \n\n\n\nThe procedure for application and evaluation consists of two steps. Project outlines in English must be submitted by 22.09.2022 to the German Cancer Aid. DESCRIPTION:Der Else Kröner Fresenius Preis für Medizinische Forschung wurde 2013 anlässlich des 25. Todestages von Else Kröner zum ersten Mal verliehen. Seitdem wurden drei Forscher ausgezeichnet. \n\n\n\nIm Jahr 2023 wird der Preis für herausragende wissenschaftliche Beiträge zu Krankheiten von weltweiter Bedeutung vergeben. Nominierungen sind vom 24. Mai bis zum 13. September 2022 möglich. \n\n\n\nDer Preis ist mit 2\,5 Millionen Euro dotiert\, wovon 500.000 Euro als persönliches Preisgeld an die Preisträgerin oder den Preisträger gehen und 2\,0 Millionen Euro für die zukünftige Forschung der Preisträgerin oder des Preisträgers bestimmt sind. \n\n\n\nNominiert werden können Forscherinnen oder Forscher im Bereich der medizinischen Grundlagenforschung oder der klinischen Wissenschaften. Sie sollen herausragende wissenschaftliche Beiträge zu Krankheiten geleistet haben\, die in Ländern mit niedrigem\, mittlerem und hohem Einkommen eine große Belastung darstellen.
